The role of a Trail Volunteer encompasses numerous activities and requires varied skills. Anyone who is interested in working on the trail is welcome to provide any one to several different kinds of help.
Trail work includes:
Clear fallen trees from trail. Note that completion of a DNR approved chain saw safety class is required before using a chain saw in the Van Loon Wildlife Area.
Grade washouts on the trail.
Cut and treat brush, weeds, and trees growing near the bridges or encroaching into the trail. Note that the DNR wants certification as a commercial pesticide applicator to use herbicide.
Monitor bridges for any damage or problems with the bridge structure, abutments, decking, trapped flood debris, or other problems.
Throughout the season, mow trail to maintain appropriate hiking path for visitors. Annually, mow back the trail.
Assist with re-decking on bridges
